Having gone through some of my old photographs from across #Edinburgh I found this of the Mound and Old Town skyline, with the beautiful and lush gardens!

What is your favorite, Old Town or New Town? #ThisisEdinburgh

⬅️SWIPEY GOODNESS 💕➡️We’ve been sunset hunting again 🤠 It was cloudy most of the time, but the clouds cleared just as the last colour disappeared from the sky. The contrast of the sunset with the clouds looked pretty cool.

One thing I love about the West Highland Way is how it slowly leads you into the heart of the Scottish Highlands. You start om the outskirts of Scotland's largest city and I'm the last day you walk through the mountains of the Nevis mountain range - it's incredible! 😍 Do you have any questions about the WHW?

Today for the first time I saw a wood ant nest. They may be small but the presence of these ants in our ancient Scottish pine forests is significant. They can influence tree growth, seed dispersal and provide food for other protected species such as badgers and capercaillie. Beautiful to see. #cairngormsnationalpark #bbcscotlandpics #visitscotland #rspbscotland #scottishwildlife #scottishwildlifetrust

Deeply horrified to learn that all seven hydro schemes were approved to be built in Glen Etive. The is supposedly a protected landscape, an area that should be protected from developments that will mar the wild and natural area. Scotland is so tiny (compared to the United States 😂) and once every bit is built up, there will be truly nothing left. Buildings and dams will make deviations into the rock and ground around the River Etive. There is no way that anyone will be able to remove the mark these schemes will leave on this landscape. Our children and grandchildren will never see this wild land the way we saw it, and that’s a horrifying thought. At the end of the day, I’m not Scottish, but I live here and I truly love the wild places we’ve found. Glen Etive is one of those places because is uniquely beautiful. It holds a special place in my heart, and it will be difficult to see it destroyed forever by these schemes. .

The Red Lion...
•
Red Castle of Lunan Bay near Montrose is classified as a scheduled monument but continues to crumble as the years pass (it was described as “imminent danger of collapse” in 1999) - the keep more so than the separate curtain wall (or enciente, if you will). It’s got a nasty big crack running up the middle, which I pointed out when I went live there on Sunday, and one corner is standing on thin air.
•
The earliest structure here dates back to one built for William the Lion, the Scottish monarch whose c.70 year reign across the late 12th / early 13th centuries was the second longest in Scottish history. This earliest structure may have been a defensible structure against the vikings or indeed just used as a hunting lodge by William. •
William’s nickname of “the Lion” related more to his standard being the red lion rampant with forked tail that is still used on the Royal Banner of Scotland rather than this being about particularly bravery. •
William did ride into battle against the English at the Battle of Alnwick in 1174, reputedly shouting “Now we will see which of is us good knights!”...before being unseated and captured by the troops of Henry II. This led to him signing the Treaty of Falaise, which entailed the subordination of Scotland to the English Crown. This was later annulled when Richard the Lionheart, the heir of Henry II, effectively sold the south of Scotland back to the Scottish king to fund his Crusade.

Had a quick stop at the Cauldron Falls last time I was up Glencoe. Definitely one to come back to when the conditions and light are better! 🏔
