Our new post about what to see and do around Ushuaia, Patagonia is now up on LifePart2. 😀
We had so much fun exploring the end of the world. This photo was taken from one of the trails at Tierra del Fuego National Park. Even in high season, you’ll find peace and solitude. Unless of course, you’re walking with me - I never stop yabbering😂😳

Full disclosure: there were other people in this pic but I edited them out 😬
Even in the dead of winter during the government shut down @brycecanyonnps_gov visitors center was still operating and there were lots of people/tourists! We did a loop down into the canyon on up one of the narrow switch back trails that are an iconic alleyway of red rock. We rarely found ourselves alone on this trail, and when we did it was only for a brief moment before we ran into another hiker or two. I can’t imagine how crowded this place must be in the summer! I feel so lucky to see it in the winter when the snows as another beautiful element to the high Utah desert canyons and landscape and even though there were people, I imagine it was much calmer and our ability to enjoy it was probably higher than peak times. Such an amazing place! 🏜

The Yosemite Firefall⁣
⁣
For a couple of weeks in February, Yosemite’s Horsetail Fall appears to be set ablaze by the last rays of the sun. It takes a few things to line up for the Firefall to occur - clear skies, enough rain and snowmelt and most importantly a setting sun at a particular angle.

Spontaneously packed up the snow gear, threw the dog and Keith in the Subie, and drove up to @joshuatreenps and surrounding @mypubliclands areas for a quick adventure!! Winter in the desert might be my favorite!

I snowshoed about two miles to Discovery Point, an easy hike under normal circumstances made much harder by the energy burnt just to stay warm. Despite it being a popular turnout in warmer months, I arrived in complete solitude, with the rolling hills of snow interrupted by sporadic trees after having passed only one like minded individual on the way. The snow and wind kicked up like crazy, and even though I had about five layers, mittens, snowboots, and hand/feet warmers, the occasional burst of wind would send the body into a shiver. These two photos were actually taken only about twenty minutes apart, one with a strong gust of wind kicking up powder everywhere and the other with some muted light from the falling sun. The world is amazing.

We visited park 14 of 61 today, and it was great! Despite the 16-degree windchill, @greatsanddunesnps amazed us with its High Dune view of the entire 30-square-mile dunefield. The hike 2.5 miles up and down 700 feet of sand was well worth it to see such a sweeping panorama of the San Luis Valley and Sangre de Cristo Mountains.

On the way to the Crater Lake' surface. The trail makes a number of sharp switchbacks while descending 700 feet in a mile. Walking down was super easy, but getting up was slightly more challenging.
Did you know that moss only grows on the north side of the trees? ( In the northern hemisphere, that is.)

The Rockies sure have some kinda big and beautiful magic going on. •••••
Thanks to Jeremy @jeremyjanusphotography for the beautiful vista. —-- I have taken a LOT of photos over the past few years, but none of them have really captivated me the way this has. This picture has haunting my thoughts, in a good way, ever since I took it. When taking nature landscapes I have had a tendency to focus on the whole scene instead of narrowing in on some of the nuances of nature that are so alluring and captivating to me in the first place. This picture does a phenomenal job of capturing that. This was a freezing cold morning, about 20 degrees out, I had already snow shoed up a canyon to come over the ridge to stand on a frozen loch lake. I still had to trek straight through the forest and up over the ridge to the left to make it up to Sky Pond to see the cathedral spires that are poking through the clouds on the upper left of this mountain. However, as you could tell from the clouds, a storm came through that forced me down, and I couldn't finish the hike until the following week (The link to my YouTube adventure of this first hike is in my bio). The aspect of photography that I have loved lately has been pushing myself to continue to get better, but in addition to that, it's the intensely strong emotional connection that I have developed with my photography in inspiring others. It has gone from just pointing and shooting a camera to wanting to convey how I am feeling and what I am experiencing in that moment. The struggle and pain I go through to get some of these shots is so inextricably linked to them and I hope you feel that too. I'm becoming so much more of a hippie with my nature photography everyday and I love it 😂😂 Loch Lake, RMNP, Colorado. Have a beautiful day!! 😁🌨☃️❄

President’s Day might be over but any day is a good day to pay tribute to one of the loveliest regions in the Midwest! I visited Mount Rushmore on foot after an aerial view via private helicopter while on a 10-day road trip I mapped out myself a couple of years ago. Started out in Minneapolis, journeyed through the Dakotas, Nebraska and Iowa before circling back up into Minnesota and was totally mesmerized by the immense beauty of Badlands National Park and the Black Hills.
From the historic mining town of Deadwood to gorgeous Custer State Park and its insane amount of bison to the subterranean ribbons of Jewel Cave National Monument to Wind Cave National Park to the Mammoth sight of Hot Springs to the still-to-be-completed Crazy Horse Memorial, there is so much awesomeness packed into this area, it’s truly one of the most epic and I feel, underrated parts of our country.
The only con? Traveling solo, I had to keep my eyes (mostly!) on the high and windy roads while driving rather than taking in the breathtaking forest from the passenger side. I was so eager to reach the next destination on my route that I didn’t stop to take any pictures and really wish I had.
Just one more reason to scale down more: so I can spend less time maintaining a bigger home than I need, and have more time to enjoy the incredible journey that is life. 🧡
