Winter storms at the Grand Canyon often mean reduced visibility, as in the canyon pretty much disappears for hours or even days at a time, as the clouds move in and the snow falls. On this date in February 2013 I waited nearly all day standing on the rim of the canyon surrounded by clouds hoping for a break in just such a storm. The wind was howling and the temperature was well below freezing. I had taken a fall on the ice while setting up my camera & tripod, I was sore and frustrated, and I was just about ready to give up when suddenly the atmosphere began to take on a subtle glow. Within less than a minute the clouds began to part and the sky over the canyon opened up allowing sunlight to stream through and strike the canyon walls. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #arizonacollective #explorearizona #instagramaz #IGSouthwest #ig bliss #optoutside #landscapephotography #landscape lovers #arizonahighways #wildernesssociety #nationalparkgeek #amongthewild #grand canyon association #grand

Wonderful image Adam!! Yea, I don't think I've been as cold as waiting for a winter image on the run of the Canyon 😁

Diana Minton @dianaminton

I admire your level of dedication! Is winter photography at the rim typically this unpredictable?

Adam Schallau @adamschallau

@michaelwilsonaz I grew up in Iowa and know cold weather, but man it can get super cold at the canyon.

@mpathimagery Thanks!

@dianaminton There are plenty of days with a clear blue sky, but when a storm is coming through it seems to be very unpredictable.

@adamschallau Thank you! Am considering going this month, so this is good info.

Adam Schallau @adamschallau

@dianaminton Hopefully you get luck and a storm coincides with your visit. Be prepared for the park to close most of the roads in the park. There’s still lots of great photos waiting to be made even if they close roads.

Diana Minton @dianaminton

@adamschallau Thank you so much, Adam!
