#Elephants are excellent swimmers like all other mammals. The only mammals that have to learn to swim are humans and the primates. The pachyderm’s massive body, very surprisingly, gives them enough buoyancy to float easily. They swim completely submerged, with their head above the water and their mouths below, and use all four legs to paddle. The biggest advantage that elephants have above all other mammals is their trunk. A very versatile proboscis, they use their trunk like a snorkel. This enables them to breathe normally when swimming and allows them to swim long distances. ✌ 🌊 πŸ“Έ: Shutterstock

A beautiful moment when a sleeping mamma gently brings her baby to the surface. Look close and you can see that her eye is still closed. She's a conscious breather, she has to come to the surface for air every 20 minutes or so. She "sleeps" by shutting half her brain down at a time, allowing her to be in a semi conscious state of rest while still being alert enough to emerge for air. Her rest is vital here in the breeding grounds as she is fasting and nursing her calf. Her calf can consume up to 500 litres of milk per day. This mother needs to conserve energy where she can in order to have the strength for her migration South to the feeding grounds in Antarctica. πŸ‹ Photo by @magentaoceans
