Ive been excited about this one since it first popped up on the back of the screen! The intense wind had blown and mixed the black sand and snow together to create these amazing shapes and designs in the snow.
The evening before this we had finally arrived in Hofn in complete darkness, only to find the road a solid sheet of polished ice. After a few days of driving all along the southern coast in just those conditions, in an Rv with only a few studs in the tires, I wasn't willing to risk the drive in. Luckily, John made a call to his local friend to see if he knew anyone that we could hire to shuttle us around, and after a few minutes we were greeted by an incredibly friendly icelandic man in his giant land cruiser decked out to the max! Boggi shuttled us around all night as we shot the aurora overhead, and even returned the next morning so we could shoot sunrise!. The next day we rented a car for the day to explore around the area some more, and of course get back to Vestrahorn for another amazing light show forecasted for this night, 4 straight nights of Aurora!
This particular light show lasted hours and hours, so long in fact I was able to set up a second camera for a short time-lapse, and even focus stack several compositions including this one!
Nikon D850 | 14-24 | ƒ/3.2 | ISO3200 | 10 seconds | 8 frames for focus, plus an extra frame to blend out a passer by's headlamp.

From a weekend in the Alabama Hills with some great friends!
I have spent the last week doing something I absolutely despise, a creativity killer....Taxes....and yeah, yeah, yeah...I know, get a CPA, haha! But I am stubborn, and its actually been enlightening for a couple of reasons, one, I suck at book keeping, and two, the business did so much better than I even realized in 2018!!! But now that it's over, I can get back to being creative!!!! just in time for my Moab workshop to kick off next week! and then its full steam ahead, including a stop back here with my Death Valley and Alabama Hills workshop April 3-7 (and there's a few spots left!

One of my favorite images, “By a Thread”! Its hard to believe that my first group workshop is just a week away now, and there’s still snow in Moab!!! This will be so cool!!! I have a full group of 7 students with lots of goodies in store! This year I’ve rolled out all new workshops, new curriculums, new lessons, better instruction, more time, and deeper connections and I just received the last of 12 CUA’s for this year! I sincerely think I’ve finally found what I am meant to do in this life!!!! I am so, so very excited for 2019 and beyond! And I’m incredibly thankful for those that have supported my work, and have made these workshops so much fun, and meaningful! I’ve got a few spots open on my Death Valley and Acadia workshops and am thinking about adding an autumn in Utah and Winter in Death Valley workshop to the roster for late 2019! =================================================

A throwback to a crazy display of light at the Black Canyon. I had no idea how to capture the immensity and drama of this storm and the amazing beauty of the canyon. It was my very first visit to this crazy deep hole in the ground, and the wind made getting near the edge pretty intense! Exploring the west the last few years has been such an amazing experience, 5 years ago none of this was even a thought. =================================================

Death Valley is one of the most amazing, and beautiful places I’ve been, and I’m not alone! Hundreds of photographers a year travel to @deathvalleynps each year and thousands more who just come to visit and just a short drive away is the equally awe inspiring Alabama Hills and the Goliath Eastern front of the Sierra mountains! I have a few spots left on my April Death Valley and Alabama Hills workshop if you want to come hang out, learn a whole bunch of stuff, talk about photography, make new friends and most of all amazing images, then consider joining me! Lodging is included at the hotel at Stovepipe Wells! Please use the link in my bio for details on this and other available workshops!

Ever since I made this image I simply have not been the same, for better or for worse this image has inspired me to keep reaching and striving to create! It has been the bar of which I have measured all of my work against, one of those rare moments of pure and utter creativity and technical execution colliding! And I’m excited to say that due to how fast my Glacier workshop sold out I have opened up a second Glacier workshop August 6-10th! limited to only 3 students, and there’s only one spot left after announcing it to my mailing list! We will be there during prime wildflowers! 🍀🌼🌸🌺🌻🍀 this workshop isn’t on my website so to sign up message me directly! =================================================

Thanks to our ambitious Icelandic friend Boggi we stumbled onto this valley surrounded by mountains. Just as the lights decided to put on a second show, we found ourselves next to the drainage of a small frozen lake, whipped and polished by the wind it reflected the aurora above so vividly! What a fun trip this was, and I’m excited to see it with lush greenery and flowing water! =================================================

I just finished pulling out the last of the barbs from my August visit now I have even more to dig out😂 if you want my advice wear thick leather boots and leather chaps out there, and no, not the a$$less ones, they target that area I swear!🤣🤮 I’m very seriously thinking about offering a winter Arizona workshop next year! ‼️‼️ To all of those self employed, dream chasers, if you are 100% reliant on your business, I want to extend a $300 off discount to any available workshops from now until the end of time‼️‼️=================================================

A beautiful morning at Vestrahorn. We were started awake by our new Icelandic friend Boggi (@icecaveiniceland ) who had come to give us a lift here as the entire road was a sheet of ice! We had all slept through our alarms because we hadn’t gone to sleep until 4am after shooting the northern lights for almost 5 hours! @whereisweatherby , @paullynchmd and myself ran around frantically for compositions, and when I rounded the bend, greeted with this nice ridge of clean, smooth sand I shouted to Paul, “I found it, get over here!”, as Paul’s photography teacher, one of my favorite things about working with him as much as I do, is when I get to blow his mind with compositions he might not see on his own yet, and it’s something I feel I’ve been particularly in tune with lately. As with most of my work, the desire for dramatic weather and light isn’t always satisfied, but sometimes those soft gradients of morning light in the sky are all you need! I had such an amazing trip with these guys, despite the tight quarters, stressful driving and awful weather I feel so close to these guys, a true test of friendship, 3 guys in an rv, all with different personalities and beliefs. Real friends see past the weird need for eggs as a first meal of the day, and need for space, I for one know that I’m not always the most laid back guy, so thanks for putting up with me guys! After Boggi brought us back to the RV, he gave Paul and I the chance to try fermented shark, an Iceland delicacy! 🤮 John, hard passed😂😂🦈

Happy valentines Day everyone! Here is some cactus love for you!
Well, I am finally home from Iceland, which was absolutely incredible, but also pretty extreme. The weather was vicious, and unforgiving, and the snow was a blessing and a curse. Although about 2/3 of the country wasn't accessible to us in the rental RV, we still covered a lot of ground and had some incredible experiences! With northern lights visible almost every single night we certainly had our fill and I spent lots of time just watching them dance over head.
The snow allowed for compositions that will never be had again, and I strived for uniqueness at the locations we were actually able to visit. I am very excited to release more images as the inspiration strikes. But first, here is an image my very good friend and long time student Paul Lynch and I captured while visiting the superstitions! One of the fondest teaching moments I can recall was searching for hours for just the right, yet unique composition of this popular place and I really, really wanted to showcase all of the beautiful cacti, and desert flowers that were beginning to bloom!
Throughout our entire trip we helped every person we could, the snow had consumed so many cars, and I like to think that karma was on our side for helping them get un-stuckl, and it kept us safe and alive despite every close call. Iceland in the winter is no place for an RV, and we know that now.
We will be announcing a WorldPix charity workshop soon once we sort out all of the logistics, and I can't wait to get back in the warmer, safer months to explore the lush green land and waterfalls!

The night sky in the New Mexico desert is pretty special! This was my first trip only a few months after moving across the country to an alien land, Utah. I just couldn’t get enough of the desert, it’s definitely become part of who I am now, it’s changed me, it’s made me slow down, pay attention and soak it all in. Now I find myself amidst a new adventure, across the sea to the land of ice! I’m so excited, I’m so thankful! I carry with me the hunger to create and the inspiration Tyler would’ve wanted me to have! I hope he will do a little magic with Mother Nature, and send me a message in the sky! It’s funny, that now I am thinking of the friend I lost, I was drawn to sharing this image, and I just realized it’s because this photo will always remind me of @j_r_moran_photography , the big brother I always needed! See you guys in Iceland!!! @whereisweatherby and I will be doing an instagram takeover on the @nisifiltersus page, so head on over and follow! =================================================

•Bisti Hoodoo Voodoo• (2016) The night sky in the New Mexico desert is pretty special! It’s funny, that now I am thinking of the friend I lost, I was drawn to sharing this image, and I just realized it’s because this photo will always remind me of @j r moran photography , the big brother I always needed! See you guys in Iceland!!! @whereisweatherby and I will be doing an instagram takeover on the @nisifiltersus page, so head

I wish I knew then what I know now, the challenge of this place was immense although my connection was deep. I returned 4 times during my first trip to Oregon in 2017, this waterfall was something I’ve wanted to photograph for years, but I just didn’t feel like I could do it justice, my justice. Waterfalls were what really pulled me into photography, so the fact that I never captured an image of this place I felt in touch with has been burdensome. I hope one day I’ll get another chance to see this beauty in all its lush and vibrant splendor.
Really looking forward to finally checking Iceland out in a few days with a couple of friends! It’s been a rocky start to 2019, but I am determined to make it the best year of my life!
