"These are the Temples of God, built without the use of human hands. A man can worship God among these great cathedrals as well as in any man-made church--this is Zion.” While I don't share the same faith as Mormon pioneer Isaac Behunin (who spoke these words well over a century ago) when I set foot in a place like Zion National Park with its immense vermillion walls exploding thousands of feet into the sky, and observe the meticulous masonry of the Virgin River having carved and sculpted sandstone and limestone for a million years, there's an undeniable holiness about the place. . As we watch cathedrals burn and topple, I urge you to remember that these sacred temples--like Zion, like the glaciers of Patagonia, Alaska, Greenland, New Zealand, like Brazil's Amazon, like the dreamy azure beaches of the South Pacific--can't be rebuilt in any of our lifetimes. No amount of crowd funding from wealthy donors can refreeze sea ice or regrow old-growth Redwoods or lower sea levels. Make

Yesterday morning, as the sun rose in a cloudless sky, I found myself moving across the Utah desert, syncing my footsteps with some eight-hundred other runners, each out with the same goal as I had: to push our bodies across fourteen or so miles of one of the world's most stunning landscapes. We wanted to feel the red sand beneath our feet; to smell the dewy sage brush and juniper trees along the trail; to watch that brilliant yellow-red line of light creep down the mesas and peaks around us; and to push our bodies a little bit (maybe just to prove we could). In those couple hours that passed in the desert I found myself feeling happily lonely knowing that I alone could push myself to complete the course and focusing intently on each footfall across mud, dirt, and slickrock. And at the same time I couldn't help but feel the ebb and flow of the whole lot of us--an organism of sorts--collectively breathing in the life-giving wilderness air and leaving our ephemeral footprints in the dust. And despite the fatigue and twinges of pain in my body as the trail wound on, I knew there was no where else I should be.

One of my favorite phenomena is the inversion layer. Warm air rises while cold air sinks into valleys, especially above rivers, where it condenses creating a blanket of fog to look down on from mountain peaks. When the fog builds enough it can spill over saddles and cascade down into the lower valleys like a silent, slow-motion waterfall. When you’re above it all, looking down at that tumbling carpet of cottony clouds, it’s easy to feel cut off from all the noise and chaos of life in the lowlands. It’s just you and that gentle breeze kissing your cheeks good morning. .

A cool breeze, sunshine, and warm sandstone to relax on seem like three pretty simple things. But the feeling you get when you combine the three is something special and is why I feel an irresistible urge to flock southwest every spring. Add some good friends into the mix and it’s a wonder I ever leave.

With longer, warmer days, cherry blossoms and daffodils popping out in every direction, and the hum of lawn mowers on weekend afternoons, it’s clear that winter has moved on in the low lands. But high in the alpine there’s still months of exploration to be had for those willing to put in the work to get there. I’m stoked to be headed back to the Kootenays in British Columbia in a few weeks for some spring turns with an all star crew and hoping for more blue bird days like this one. Who else has backcountry hut trips on the mind?

Somehow, each spring, the desert southwest seems to find me and draw me back. It is, to me, a transitional place, which makes sense in a way when you consider how brutally hot its summers are and how bitingly cold its winters. But in spring and fall it’s a window open to a retreat from the cold and gray and wet (or the anticipation of it), prematurely (or stubbornly) warm and sunny, bursting with vibrance and light.

My first road trip out west back in 2006 brought me to Grand Teton National Park. I couldn’t believe mountains existed with such incredible scale and character. Little did I know the entire North American west is packed with equally impressive ranges, many of which I’ve been fortunate enough to stand and stare, slack jawed, at through the years since. But the Tetons will always leave me momentarily breathless on first glimpse each time I return. A truly special place. .

“Wilderness is not a luxury but a necessity of the human spirit, and as vital to our lives as water and good bread. A civilization which destroys what little remains of the wild, the spare, the original, is cutting itself off from its origins and betraying the principle of civilization itself.” Edward Abbey wrote these words in his seminal novel, Desert Solitaire, decades ago in the months before Glen Canyon was dammed and flooded, creating Lake Powell. To this day it remains one of the more controversial public works projects in US history with many calling for it to be drained and allowed to return to some semblance of its former glory. Others tout it as crucial to powering the cities of the southwest and providing tourism revenue for local stakeholders, including the Navajo Nation.
Regardless of where you land on this debate, one thing that’s for certain is Lake Powell is an absolutely stunning place filled with otherworldly geology, wide open vistas, and brilliant blue and turquoise waters.

What a difference a week makes! Last Sunday we were making turns in cold, soft snow on north facing aspects in @mountrainiernps. Today, we battled variable crusts, deep, sticky slush, and everything in between. Spring is still four days away but it’s already making its mark on the mountain snowpack. .

Like any true Enneagram Type 7, while high on the wall of ice, bedecked in 14 lethal spikes, bundled thickly against the sub-zero windchill and blowing snow, feet and hands cramping, attached to the wall by a combined two inches of steel, what was going through my head was, “this is awesome, but I should combine this with skiing next time.”

Since I first set foot in Yellowstone in 2006 I’ve dreamt of returning during the winter when deep snow and bitter cold make the place seemingly inhospitable (at least to people.) My hope was to gain a different perspective of a park that can often feel like Disney World—too populated, too paved. I wanted to watch beasts thrive against the odds in a brutal environment and to observe an otherworldly geothermal phenomenon battle against obliteration—heat pushing back the cold. .
These two brutes sparred over a snow-blown patch of grass, practicing perhaps for a more high-stakes show of dominance, and either way showing how every resource is up for grabs. .

When it comes to fly fishing I fall well into the novice category. But that doesn’t damper how much fun I always seem to have when I give it a try. Fishing in Montana’s Paradise Valley has been at the top of the list for me for a long time. Besides being an idyllic agricultural haven, it’s also been a retreat and source of inspiration for artists and actors alike from Jeff Bridges to Springsteen to John Mayer. Looking up from the creek out to Emigrant Peak and the Absaroka Mountains, it’s easy to see why the valley was so named in the first place. @eddiebauer #liveyouradventure #ebcontributor
