When it comes to fly fishing I fall well into the novice category. But that doesn’t damper how much fun I always seem to have when I give it a try. Fishing in Montana’s Paradise Valley has been at the top of the list for me for a long time. Besides being an idyllic agricultural haven, it’s also been a retreat and source of inspiration for artists and actors alike from Jeff Bridges to Springsteen to John Mayer. Looking up from the creek out to Emigrant Peak and the Absaroka Mountains, it’s easy to see why the valley was so named in the first place. @eddiebauer #liveyouradventure #ebcontributor

One last lap before sunset. I’m not sure if it was the tendrils of spindrift cascading down from the cliffs above, the pinstripe rock striations of the surrounding peaks, the subtle peach hue creeping out of the west as the day grew long, or simply the satisfying “thwack” of a well-placed ice ax strike, but I’ve sure got the itch to pop some spikes on and give this ice climbing thing another go.

Hakuba Valley wowed us the past couple days with its jagged peaks and huge scale. I’m glad we got to experience this part of Japan for the first time. Now, we’re trading in the bigger peaks of the main island for the deeper snow of Hokkaido. It looks like it’s going to be a deep week.

I’m soaring over the North Pacific at 600 miles per hour, just a few miles off the coast of the island of Honshu. The excitement is hitting me hard and I can’t wait for so many things over the next two weeks: watching friends rediscover this country, watching friends experience it for the first time, ramen, sushi, gnarled birch trees haunting blank sheets of snow, driving on the left, sake, ramen, the eternal neon of Tokyo, ramen, and of course, so many sweet, sweet powder shots straight to the kisser. Did I mention I can’t wait to eat ramen?

There we were, surrounded by hundreds of miles of toothy peaks and sagging valleys groaning under the weight of a billion tons of snow, blinking back the savage and brilliant brightness of a thousand square miles of sunlit glory land, turning on weary legs back uphill because still, on that mountainside lying in wait, hung a blank canvas waiting to be subdivided by the tentacles of our descent.

When I think back on some of my earliest memories my mind drifts into dimly-lit, cavernous spaces, sonically strung with soaring arpeggiations and cascading melodies hanging above a densely harmonic baritone melange. Slicing through it all is the omnipresent ring of the lushest, clearest, most exquisite voice--at once fiercely dominant and completely enthralling: the sound of my mother's french horn reverberating off the walls around me.

See, I grew up in symphony halls, following my mom to her rehearsals and concerts, in tow with my older brother and sister. We played games and read books beneath the musty seats of auditoriums, Brahms and Bizet, Schubert and Chopin our soundtrack--no headphones required. I learned from a young age the allure of rich textures and the temptation of a perfectly crafted melodic line (remember: no parallel fifths or octaves). I discovered the unique contribution of each instrument's voice to that living orchestral organism. To this day there is nothing like the aural experience of a live symphony.

So much of my childhood experience around music translated into my career in photography when I grew older and picked up a camera. One element of orchestral music I learned to love is texture. My favorite photos have captivating textures; details that give a photograph a tactile aspect and give me the opportunity to mentally crawl into the scene and interact with the subjects. This photo, from Banff, captures an incoming snow squall that gives the mountains a texture like the stroke of a paintbrush. Looking into it, I can feel the chill of the air around me and the tiny pinpricks of snowflakes blowing against my face

会者定離 This Japanese phrase, loosely translated, means that every beautiful meeting must end with a parting. This idiom has been particularly pertinent a few times in my life: when I boarded my return flight after six months living in Quito, Ecuador; watching the Rocky Mountains disappear on the horizon at the end of my first visit to The West; moving from Boston to Seattle six years ago; and most recently traveling to Hokkaido, Japan last January to ski its legendary powder. I'm a sentimental person--I romanticize places I've been, dwell on experiences I've had--and as such I tend to want to return to those same spots, see familiar faces and meet new ones, discover a new perspective, enrich my knowledge of those cultures, and add to the cache of memories I've been fortunate to have accumulated. I knew the moment I lifted off from Tokyo a year ago that I would be back. Think I’ll keep up the trend this year? After all, they don’t call it Japanuary for nothing....

Tonight I finish my 34th trip around the sun. Growing up I never thought I’d travel to Japan to ski, to the Alps to hike through France, Italy, and Switzerland, and to Banff (pictured here), amongst so many other incredible places in the course of a single year, and make a living of it, nonetheless. At the same time, this past year was full of challenges, frustrations, and downright failures. To be honest, I’m grateful for all of these things—the good and the bad—not because I have any idea how all of they’ll all play out, but because they all make me uniquely me. In a world (and on a social media platform) where it seems fewer and fewer people value that individuality, there aren’t many things more precious. If I were good at setting goals, I suppose for 2019 one would be to embrace that individuality more. Happy new year, everyone!

“The barometric pressure at sea level is 760 torr, a unit of measure named after Torricelli. By 10,000 feet the pressure has dropped to 525 torr, and at the 14,410-foot summit of Mount Rainier the pressure is around 440 torr, or more than forty percent less than at sea level. Most of the air collects at the bottom of the troposphere. When you stand atop Mount Rainier, almost half the weight of the world’s air floats beneath you.” -Bruce Barcott .

This is one of the first spots I ever visited in Washington State, all the way back in 2008. @kellywlake and I were looking for a place we'd never traveled before to spend a week in early September and the cheapest flights we could find were either to Seattle or Los Angeles, so we narrowed the choices down to Joshua Tree National Park or North Cascades National Park. We were settled on Joshua Tree until a friend of ours from LA called and informed us it'd likely be brutally hot that time of year in the Mojave, so we audible'd and bought flights to Seattle instead.
Before we knew it, we were cruising along the North Cascades Highway and could barely contain ourselves when we rounded the bend and found this classic vista over Diablo Lake. We'd read that NCNP was one of the least-visited parks in the country but, standing in this spot, we couldn't believe more people didn't flock here.

Now this vista is a common stop for us each time we cross the state via WA-20 and serves as a reminder to us that even some of the most common and easily-accessible viewpoints out here can stir up feelings of awe and wonder. Now that the North Cascades Highway will be closing for the winter a few miles west of this rest stop, we'll have to reserve our visits for summer months. Hopefully, this just makes our stops here all the more special.

“....I’m here, camped in a shallow depression atop a broad, rolling ridge almost exactly halfway across the northern unit of the North Cascades National Park with my friend Scott and we’ve got eyes on three peaks. This trip is a bit of a beast--forty miles on foot with almost 15,000 vertical feet gained and lost in just three days--and my legs and back are already heavy and sore from our first day’s approach. Poking my head out of the tent I can see our biggest objective, Whatcom Peak, is ringed by the peach glow of dawn, and the clouds that whipped by our tent last night on a stiff breeze have settled lazily into the Chilliwack River Valley several thousand feet below us, creating a river of fog above the river of….river.”
