Today, my wife and I were coming back home from Tucson and after we past Pine Valley (maybe around 4:30pm) we saw these amazing clouds in the sky that were lighting up with gorgeous orange tones. I knew it was going to be a good sunset but we were too far to make it back home or to the coast so we decided to rush to Mt Helix and catch the sunset there. We drove up and of course there was no parking available so she took the wheel and I jumped out and ran up the steps. I just barely caught the end of the sunset. Thankfully she's pretty supportive of my photography.

This is from last sunday, my final outing of 2018. @seemantad was in town from seattle and I went with him and @highdynamicsphoto to check out the tide pools/coast at sunset cliffs. There was a very low negative tide and we used it to explore the beach around Ross Rock.
Technical

Going from memory this was shot at ISO 100, 16mm, f/11, and 0.5s. One more darker exposure was used for exposure blending to fix a small area with burnout in the sky. I actually forgot to bring my ND filters so it was a little frustrating as I had to wait for it to get dark enough for the slower shutter. Cropped a bit for IG.

Last nights full moon rising over Balboa Park. The neon colors are from the seasonal flood lights pointed at the California tower and dome. This photo took a bit of planning, a foot to the left or right and things wouldn't have aligned. This is a single exposure, not a composite.

This photo was shot at 182mm, f/11, ISO 100, 1.3s. Processed in LR and PS. The hard part was the scouting and planning. Fortunately I know this area of the park well and I used PlanIt / @planitphoto to figure out the alignment. I could have pushed the recovery of highlights in the moon a bit further but decided against it as I like the brighter moon in this composition. Cropped a bit for IG.

This mornings sunrise from Balboa Park. I shot the image, came back home, went for a run, and quickly processed it while having my morning coffee.

Technical -- this a quick and easy 2x1 vertical panorama made with a 24mm tilt/shift lens. Basically I take a picture of the bottom 2/3rds of the image, then shift the lens up and get the last 1/3 at the top. Because I'm using a t/s the panorama stitching is very easy and can be done with the reposition option. There was a tiny bit of blowout in the bottom right along the horizon. I fixed this by blending a little from a 1 and 2-stop darker bracket.

"Sit and stay awhile". It's overcast and gloomy right now but the sunrise this morning was spectacular. Here's the view of downtown San Diego from Harbor Island. Have a great weekend everyone. Technical This is focus stack and exposure blend. I took three shots with my focus at roughly 2.5, 5, and 12 meters (although I only used the shots at 5m and 12m for my focus stack). These were at 25mm, ISO 100, f/11, and 4s. I also bracketed my exposures for my photos at 12m and took additional shots at 2s, 1s, 0.5s. I used these darker exposure to recover the burnt out highlights in my 4s shot. Cloned out a lamp post. Spreckles Theatre from last night. We had a deluge of rain last night and I took advantage of it to catch some reflections downtown. Thankfully, I didn't need to drive because I live about a 10 minute walk away. I actually tried to get this shot last year but we had so little rain it never happened. I'm hoping we get quite a bit more so that we can actually get a decent spring wildflower bloom.

Technical Details: There's not too much behind this shot. Main thing was keeping my lens dry with an umbrella. It was difficult because of the wind and my camera was very low so the rain would splash back up into the lens. Every once in a while I'd wipe the lens when there were too many water spots (I think a few are good as they create the flare spots but too many is overwhelming). I did manually blend a clear shot with a shot with water spots so I could control the flare.

Norfolk Pine Christmas Tree at Liberty Station.
We don't get snow here in San Diego but I thought I could make a Christmas scene using the stars instead. Monday night, I setup my camera in Liberty Station and recorded the stars streaking across the sky over the course of an hour. I know it's not quite the same but it reminds me of falling snow.

Technical Info

Conceptually I think about making shots like this by separating out the foreground from the background/sky. I keep the framing and composition the same but I might change the exposure to deal with the different light levels. In this case, I first shot the christmas tree at 55mm, f/11, ISO 100, and 60s exposure. I then changed my exposure to f/4.5 and 30s, plugged in my intervalometer, and started shooting for the sky.
To record the star movement I kept the camera going for about an hour which resulted in ~120 frames. In post, I used StarStax to combine my sky shots into trails. I then manually blended this with my initial shot at f/11 for the christmas tree. I think I was very lucky because there was almost no wind which made the blending much easier.

Tonight's sunset at the Point Loma Lighthouse.

Sometimes it can be a bit hard to stick to your plan. I shot the lighthouse from the back side looking towards the southeast away from the sun. While I was waiting, the sky really started burning in the west but the clouds right above the lighthouse weren't being touched. I was so very tempted to change my composition and run over to the front of the lighthouse for the traditional composition but I decided to sit and wait. It seemed like forever, but it was probably only 10 minutes and then clouds above the lighthouse started glowing.

Note: I came out here with @jbahuphotos. I think he will post his shot too so check out his feed.

I really enjoy shooting the milky way along the coast of San Diego, although it can be quite difficult. This shot is from the summer, when I snuck down to the caves in sunset cliffs during the middle of the night. I remember it was really hot and humid and there were a ton of little flies on the beach that were extremely annoying. I worked on this photo for a while but wasn't happy so I set it aside. Came back to it recently and here it is.

Technical:

This is a focus and noise stacked image:

sky: ISO 1600, f/4, 16mm, 18s x42
foreground: 4 focus points each at ISO 1600, f/4, 16mm, 60s x7

The sky was really difficult to work with. There was a lot of moisture in the air which made it hard to get a clean image of the milky way. Normally If I'm stacking I would do 8-15 shots but I took 21 to give me a little extra leeway. It turned out 21 was not enough so I combined two different sets to get to 42 (I usually repeat my shots in case my focus is off). In theory, averaging 42 shots should give 2.7 stops extra performance.

For the foreground, I lit the cave with an LED panel. I didn't really need to stack for noise in the foreground but I got to the cave early and had to wait anyway for the MW to line up with the entrance. Nothing else to do so I ran my intervalometer and took a bunch of shots.

I'll probably go back and reshoot under better conditions.

I'm falling a little bit behind in my IG posts. This one was from last week when I went out to Coronado for the sunrise.

This is a single exposure, ISO 100, 17mm, f/11, 8s. I had 3-stop ND and a polarizer on my lens. Note I almost never use a polarizer for sunrise/sunsets because I usually want the reflections. But this time I thought it might be nice to see if I could catch the rocks under the water as a foreground subject, so put it on my lens. Image cropped a bit for instagram.

Also I almost didn't make it out here. Although I woke up early and I live in downtown, I ran into an accident on the bridge. Coronado was also completely stuffed with traffic. Perhaps the roll call in the morning? I've gone early before and never saw it this bad. I was actually going to Bayview park, but didn't think I'd make it in time.

Have a great Thanksgiving everyone.

Tonight I went out to Garbage beach at the south end of Sunset Cliffs for sunset. I have been out here a few times before but never managed to shoot this rock formation. I knew from my prior trips that the tide (at about 2') would be just right for the photo I had in mind: I wanted the rock formation with the pools of water reflecting the last bit of sunlight. However I didn't want the water to be disturbed by incoming waves.

I had the pleasure of running into @ivan_farca on the way down. But we had totally different ideas on what to shoot so ended up at opposite ends of the beach.

Technical Info

This is 2x1 vertical panorama. The foreground is a single shot at ISO 100, 16mm, f/11, 1.6s and then two shots for the sky at ISO 100, 16mm, f/11, at 0.8 and 0.4s. My camera shoots 42MP images and panorama turned out to be 51MP so I'm only extending the image a tiny bit to get more sky. There was a bit of burnout where the sun was located in the 0.8s sky shot so I blended a small amount from the 0.4s shot. I believe I had a 3-stop ND filter on for these shots. Although water movement wasn't a feature of this image, I still wanted the background waves to be a bit softer.

I almost deleted this image.
Last week I went out to the LJ coast with a friend to photograph the milky way while the core was still up. The first night we did some scouting and found a spot that was that was pretty dark and sheltered from house lights. We were too late to photograph so we came back out the next night to shoot. Conditions were good, there was a little moisture in the air but not enough to reflect light pollution from the city back at us. There were also a few clouds in the sky but there were enough gaps to catch the milky way peeking out. I snapped away and took maybe 30 images over the course of an hour.

So why did I almost delete this image? I had made an initial preliminary edit and I didn't really like the image. My quick edit looked similar but the clouds were significantly fainter (due to stacking which effectively blurs the cloud movement like a long exposure). In my opinion, this weakened the composition. In my final image the two of sets of clouds bracket the core and help direct the eye to the spot where the core meets the horizon. The leading lines all come to a center point along with the shoreline rocks. Thankfully I shared this initial version with a few friends and after their feedback decided to keep working on it.

This is probably my last milky way outing for this year. The moon is waxing and by the time the next new moon phase comes around, the core will be below the horizon by the time it gets dark.

Technical Info

This is a 2x1 panorama with the forground shot at ISO 640, 25mm, f/7.1, 136s, LENR on. I then tilted my camera up to get more of the sky and took another shot at ISO 1600, 25mm, f/2.5, 15s, LENR off. Stitched in PS with the panorama merge function. Note that both the foreground and sky are single shots -- normally I would stack the sky shots to improve SNR but as mentioned above that would cause the slow moving clouds to blur and fade away.

Here's a shot from the pedestrian bridge over harbor drive in downtown San Diego. This was taken on sunday night and we had somewhat unusual weather conditions as there was a light fog that started rolling in from the coast. The fog really diffused the light and gave the whole scene a somewhat airy feeling along with a pink glow. Thanks to @jbahuphotos for convincing me to come out here.

This is a blend of three shots. One shot that I used as the base image at ISO 100, 55mm, f/11, 1.6s. Then I used two additional shots for the car trails at f/16 and 6s. These were taken within a few minutes of each other. Normally I don't like to go with a smaller aperture than f/11 due to diffraction softness but in this case I was just trying to capture the light trails from the cars so a little softness did not matter. Blended in photoshop with a soft brush using either Lighten or Normal blend mode (I use both and see which looks better). #sandiego #sandiego_ca #sandiegodowntown #sandiegoskyline #sandiegoconventioncenter #10news #fox5sandiego #mysdphoto #wheresandiego #SDLife #visitsd #sdpulse #sandiegowx #lighttrails #sandiegosunsets #longexpo_addiction

I was absolutely stunned by the sunset tonight. The clouds lit up and put this incredible warm soft glow over everything. Here's my picture from just north of Windansea Beach.

Backstory: I had been chatting with @asaro.nation this afternoon and we were trying to figure out where we could go that would be good for sunset at high tide (4.8ft). I had shot at Fern Glen before but only at low tide. So I ran it by him because he's shot so much here -- he thought it would work out due to the rock structure. So glad we came out here. I later met up with @suchismitasen and @matinsdreams -- it's wonderful meeting other photogs and chatting while you're waiting for the sunset.

Technical -- This is an exposure blend with two images, one for the foreground and a darker one for the sky. These are at 16mm, f/11, ISO 100, and 1/3 and 1s. I probably could have gotten away with just one image as there was just a tiny bit of burnout in the sky. The blend was easy and takes about 10s in PS with the gradient tool.

However the hard part about processing this image was trying to figure out exactly how much color cast there should be in the water. Straight out of the camera there's an incredible glow and cast to the water, this is exagerated somewhat when you add contrast (unless you use luminosity blend mode in PS -- this isn't possible in LR). So I spent some time desaturating the water a bit. I'm not quite sure I have the color balance right in the water, I'll revisit in a week or so with fresh eyes.

Sunset Cliffs, San Diego

Tonight's sunset from Sunset Cliffs. Not many people were here and I basically had half of Garbage beach to myself! Technical: this is a 2x1 panorama (I sometimes stitch vertically so that I can get a little more sky in my image and sometimes I prefer the 4x5 aspect ratio). Tonight's full moon rising over Ash Street in downtown (San Diego of course!). Taken with my friend @kamalavenkatesh.

This is the remains of an old homestead in east county. Probably abandoned for at least 70 years. My friend @astro_landscape_gal had been out here to shoot before and she wanted to return so we came out here last week (on the night of the thunderstorms) hoping to get a last bit of milky way shooting before the season ends.

I spent a fair bit of time looking for a composition. Initially was thinking of shooting toward the south to get the MW core but the chimney didn't line up. Decided to skip the milky way as the chimney was just too cool.

This is a blend. Sky: 3 shots @ 20s, f/4, ISO 1600, 16mm stacked in Starry Landsccape Stacker. I used only 3 shots here because the combined 1 minute of exposure gave the right amount of cloud blur. Foreground: 1 shot @ 61s, f/10, ISO 100, 16mm
