This was taken at the Osmania Arts College, the first building of the Osmania project - which has completed a centum. The University was the first in the Hyderabad state, the first in India to have Urdu as a medium of instruction. This building was part of Osman Ali Khan's dream. The form and style were inspired from the Madrasa and Mosque of Sultan Hassan in Egypt, a Mamluk creation. It is a fantastic mix of Levant art with smooth arches and traditional muqarnas and modern robustness.

Asaf Jah architecture I.
The Station at Kacheguda was constructed by Asaf Jah VII Osman Ali Khan. It went on to serve as the Headquarters of the Nizam's Guaranteed State Railway. This railway zone began with the Nizam's funding of the Secunderabad-Wadi line (Wadi being a station in present day Gulbarga District of Karnataka, in Central Railways). But later the Nizams took over the region's railways but started with a Private-Public Partnership of sorts before finally sponsoring it completely themselves. The building reflecting the Asaf Jahs' own aesthetic and political inclinations, follows modern Indo-Sarcenic styles (hence the Gothic elements). Several trains for Tirupati, Bangalore, Delhi, Chennai, Bhopal etc depart from here.

Kailasa Temple at Ellora (Cave 16) is one of India's architectural jewels. It belongs to the Dravidian style and can be viewed along with Kailasanathar of Kanchi and Virupaksha of Pattadakal. It began during the reign of Rashtrakuta King Dantidurga but worked under Krishna I. The plan however seems disordered. The Garbhagriha for instance is not in the ground but first story and has a large Shiva Linga. It is faced by a shrine that holds the Nandi. The Prakara of the temple is filled with sculptures and depictions of stories from the Puranas and epics, and deities and gods from the Hindu pantheon. The temple appears like a breathing encyclopedia to the faith of the day.

Daulatabad Fort is a uniquely structured fort lain over the topography of the Deccan. The lower layers of the fort were constructed by the Yadavas of Deogiri - Deogiri being the earlier name of the place (getting its name from the myth of Shiva's stay here). During and since the raids of Alauddin Khilji the fort came under the control of Delhi. One could safely call it the Southern Headquarters of Northern Empires. For defence purposes Muhammad bin Tughlaq shifted his capital to Devgiri and named it Daulatabad. Daulatabad later came under the control of the Bahmanis and then the Nizam Shahis of Ahmadnagar and so on. The fort has a major moat whose bridge becomes a gate with spikes. It has no exit gate. The entry functions as exit. And the passage to the top is through a narrow and dark passage. The fort is also dotted with many canons. The shape of the fort - like a smooth turtle shell - is perhaps the most striking. In a distance one can see in the picture, Chand Minar a tower built by the Bahmani Sultan to celebrate the capture of Daulatabad.

Bibi Ka Maqbara popularly called Mini Taj Mahal was a masoleum built by Azam Shah for his mother Dilras Banu Begum (who was born a Safavid princess). It was the centre of the late Mughal Aurangabad settlement. However owing to the distance from the main centres of Mughal power and distance from the Mughal heyday the beauty of architecture and style are diminished. One sees the Rajput elements that are popular in earlier Mughal monuments slowly fade away. Dilras' husband Aurangzeb is buried not far away. The architect Ataullah was the son of Taj Mahal's designer; was assisted by engineer Hanspat Rai.

Cave 10, Vishwakarma Cave.
This is one of the magnificent Buddhist Caves at Ellora. It is a Buddha-Stupa Chaitya or a prayer hall with a Buddha-Stupa at its centre. The beam that supports the pillars is adorned by bijou images of the Buddha in robes. The preaching Buddha is sheltered by Palakas and flying divine beings like Yakshas. The ceiling of the cave looks wooden-like hence its name carpenter cave or Vishwakarma Cave.

Avalokiteswara Padmapani. Padmapani is a widely worshipped and central Bodhisattva in Mahayana Buddhism. He is an embodiment of compassion that is at the heart of the Mahayana philosophy. In fact the Dalai Lama is regarded as an incarnation of the divine figure. This is the most popular depiction of the persona. This is from Cave no. 1 which dates back to the time of the Vakatakas who sponsored this cave at Ajanta for Mahayana monks. This monastery or Vihara is known for the beautiful frescoes with rich colours. This painting has also become an icon for the exoticness of India. One can't help but notice the Bodhisattva as the train chugs in the background in David Lean's A Passage to India.

Tomb of Malik Ambar. Malik Ambar was a political and military superstar of the seventeenth century. He was an Ethiopian Slave who rose ranks to be a crestjewel of the Ahmednagar administration. He acted as a bastion that kept both the formidable Mughals under Jahangir and Shah Jahan; and the Sultanate of Bijapur to the south at bay. His influence was what allowed him to plan and construct Aurangabad (which he named Khirki but was changed by Aurangzeb) in the shadow of Devgiri-Daulatabad. He finally succumbed to the forces of Murad Baksh and Aurangzeb at Samugarh. This orphaned tomb (similar to those of the Bidar Sultans) lay in the dusty outskirts of Khuldabad where also Aurangzeb lies.

Miniature art is one of the favorites to our sculptors especially those who worked on softer media - like this one. This is a mini panel of schist in the Trikuteshwara Complex, Gadag. This temple is from the Kalyani Chalukya era and style. The style is expressed in the depiction of attire and the curves of the figure. Close examination of the figure's accessories reveals that this is an imitation of Vishnu in the Maithuna pose with his consort Lakshmi flanked by lions standing on elephants. The most attractive element is perhaps the studded robe with flows from Vishnu's waist. Only brilliant craftsmanship could have yielded it.

The Stupas of Sanchi are among the most well-known monuments in the subcontinent. The buildings at Sanchi which began in the Mauryan Era saw contributions through 600 years into the Gupta period. Apart from the Stupas there are temples and monastries as well. This statue of the Sarnath type is The Buddha in the Dhyana pose. His enlightenment is indicated by the large beautiful and elaborate halo that touches his back. He is flanked by fairies and palakas. His robes are gentle and unobtrusive. The statue is from a temple in the vicinity but today placed at Stupa 1, The Great Stupa.

The iconic Nataraja (dancing Shiva) took off from the workshops of Tanjavur. This is a beautiful and ornate Shiva statue at Brihadeeswara Temple, Tanjavur. Shiva's matted hair which serves as a handle to his asceticism is kempt under a crown. In two of his arms he carries a drum and Damaru. Like most kings the Cholas used visual puns or Sleshas to unify themselves with divinity. The pride seen in this figure can also be read as a self image of Emperor Rajaraja.

Pushkar is a lakeside town on the fringes of the Thar; bordered by the Aravalli. It is a city of 50 odd ghats and several old temples. Pushkar enjoys a prestigious position in the Puranas. Vishwamitra is said to have been seduced by Menaka on Indra's order in this very site. However the most popular tale tied to this site is that of Brahma's marriage to Gayatri. Brahma is said to have performed a Yagna here and in the absence of Saraswati (or Savitri) taken a local wife for the rites. This enraged Saraswati who cursed him of not being worshipped anywhere but this site hence Pushkar is the most famous Brahma temple. Savitri chose a hill in the town as her abode. There is dispute in Puranic study about why this was chosen as a site for the Yagna. Some say the Brahma slayed a demon here and that a few petals from his blue lotus landed on the ground to become the lake. Others say a blue lotus dropped from the beak of Saraswati.
